Recently, Apple dropped a new bombshell for device users. Released on September 16, 2020, iOS 14 brought a multitude of new features. Today, we’ll be outlining some of the most prominent additions to the iPhone and iPad.

Widgets

Created for convenient utility, widgets are now more accessible, practical, and flexible. Fitted into three templates (small, medium, and large), widgets are now available for applications like the weather, battery statistics, and music shortcuts. Apple cites a redesign for the following apps:

Weather, Clock, Calendar, News, Maps, Fitness, Photos, Reminders, Stocks, Music, TV, Tips, Notes, Shortcuts, Battery, Screen Time, Files, Podcasts, Siri Suggestions.

These programs all feature custom home screen widgets that can be used as shortcuts to essential subsections and headlines. Described as “information at a glance,” you can now place a widget for viewing top headlines on your home screen. Depending on the size, you can adjust the amount of information on the widget. Not only that, but you can also stack widgets into the rotation if you want to save space. Finally, they can also be customized and used as decoration.

App Library

iOS 14 makes it extremely easy to organize apps. Instead of cramming them into tightly packed folders, apps are now automatically sorted into a home screen section called the “App Library.” Essentially, Apple has introduced a new dashboard to help you store your programs. They’re categorized into folders that don’t show up on the home page and are easily accessible through a dashboard on the screen’s right-hand side. The convenience of having your apps automatically sorted is impressive, and it helps declutter your phone.

FaceTime

Facetime notifications are received as drop-down banners, as opposed to full page notifications. While they previously took up your entire screen, you’re now met with a light notification at your screen’s top.

Picture in Picture

Apple has made multitasking a convenient option through the new “Picture in Picture” feature. You can essentially scroll through Instagram while watching Netflix or viewing a movie while on a Facetime call. When you exit a video app, a small portion of your screen continues to be delegated for your viewing pleasure, making it easy to respond to texts and emails.

AirPods

Apple’s new spatial audio system provides a dynamic listening experience meant to resemble a surround sound theatre. Supposedly, new syncing allows for the AirPods to adjust your sound quality depending on your head position through a gyroscope.

The innovation list through iOS 14 is exceptionally long, but these are likely the most eye-catching updates in the system. What’s your favorite feature? Send us a DM on Instagram @Genfluencer!
