Following G.O.A.T tradition, LeBron James was the main star in the recent movie Space Jam: A New Legacy. Produced by Warner Brothers, the Space Jam sequel has various bright, dark, and grey production areas.

The main point of criticism was bound to be the acting of LeBron James himself.  Even before the movie was released, everyone knew that the watchers would be there mainly to see how the NBA’s best player could handle himself as the main star of a feature film.

But surprisingly enough, LeBron’s acting wasn’t as bad as everyone had previously expected. The consensus among most people has been that he did an admirable job as the movie’s star, clearly putting in emotion and effort to the extent that he could. It’s rare for superstars to put a lot of effort into parts like these, so seeing such a strong attempt by LeBron James earns some points for the movie itself.

The other strong point in Space Jam: A New Legacy is animation. Although many have argued that the constant setting changes and engaging special effects are tired, Warner Brothers never fail to amaze. Even with the monster budget of $150M, the character animation is ultra-realistic, and the movie’s setting is visually appealing.

Yet, the movie’s been failing at the hands of movie critics. With ratings in the 30s/40s on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, it doesn’t seem like LeBron James did enough to put the movie in good standings.

The critics point out a couple of areas of focus.

1st, the movie comes off as a massive advertisement. Warner Brothers logos, characters, and messaging are plastered across the plot, the setting, and the dialogue. Even the main villain and his invention work for Warner Brothers, meaning that some of the positives are outweighed by the amount of annoying product placement.

2nd, the acting of LeBron James isn’t bad, but it’s also not good. For people that are watching for the sake of a good time, it’ll be enough. But for critics looking for a heartfelt story, his performance doesn’t have enough skill to hit the mark.

Aside from that, the movie also features various plot holes and minor problems that could leave a viewer thinking, “well, that doesn’t make sense.” Whether it’s the fact that the game’s fourth quarter gets entirely skipped and nobody scores until the final ten seconds (after each team has 1000 points entering the fourth), or that the main villain controls the game’s code but doesn’t utilize his power, some things have pretty measurable problems.

However, Space Jam: A New Legacy isn’t a bad movie. It’s a fun movie that continues a tradition, lets LeBron James show off his mediocre acting, and features enough cool effects to make itself pretty enjoyable.
