For those who have wondered what goes on behind the scenes in an NBA team’s front offices, you’ll soon get to experience the unique and anxious perspective on Netflix. Recently, the streaming service has ordered a new series inspired by the Los Angeles Lakers’ front office and popular show “The Office.”

With the Lakers as one of the most profitable franchises in the sport, the show production will provide a glimpse into how the owners and front office team handle the crucial and expensive business aspects of the game.

Expected to be both funny and informative, it’ll likely provide an overview of NBA norms. The extent to which the NBA aspect will be important is currently unknown.

Leading the production team will be Elaine Ko (Modern Family) alongside executive producers Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project, The Office), Howard Klein (The Mindy Project, The Office), and Linda Rambi and Jeanie Buss (president and governor of the Lakers).

The series will be loosely based on the inner workings of the Lakers franchise while partially playing on past themes used in the hit show “The Office.” The Office is widely regarded as one of TV’s best creations in the comedy category.

According to the streaming service’s logline, “The series is inspired by the personal and professional dynamic between the family owners and front office team that together run one of the most iconic franchises in all of sports: the Los Angeles Lakers. The workplace comedy follows fictional team governor Eliza Reed as she navigates NBA ownership and family drama with her best friend by her side.”

Jeanie Buss revealed her excitement for the upcoming project on Twitter. In her tweet, she also explained why they’ll be incorporating a comedy aspect to the show.

Mindy Kaling and Elaine Ko are brilliant accomplished creators and I’m thrilled to be part of this dream team. I’ve spoken many times about humor playing an important role in my mental health and wellbeing so this is a natural. Thank you @netflix for giving us this platform.”

The first season of the new show is set to have ten half-hour episodes. It has not yet been announced when the release date will be.
