Users who recently opened their Instagram profile yesterday were met with a new addition to their profile. In response to a growing tendency to disclose pronouns that people go by, Instagram’s team decided to add a personal pronouns section to some pages.

For those interested in disclosing their pronouns, clicking “edit profile” on your page allows you to do so.

You’ll see a section labeled “pronouns” below the box used to write your name. When clicked on, you’ll be able to add four different variations of whatever labels you ask people to refer to you as.

The added information then shows up next to your name in a dark, grey-ish font. All in all, this is a seamless and straightforward addition to your profile.

Pronouns are critical to maintaining one’s identity, making Instagram’s new move extremely important and influential.

Similarly, it provides affirmation for the world’s growing population of people who refer to themselves in ways that may need prior specifications.

The feature hasn’t been released on all profiles, and some users are saying that they can’t access it.

As such, Instagram has created a new form for those who cannot use the new feature. Anyone without it now has the option to request the addition of their preferred pronouns to their profile. The application can be found here. No information on the time that these requests take have been released at this time.

Instagram also specified that the option is only available in select countries right now. If you can’t access it, that may be the reason.

However, they wrote that it would soon be prepped for expansion. As all features go, making it accessible to every user takes a lot of time, planning, and money.

This new Instagram feature has been met with a highly positive response, especially among those directly impacted by it.
