Influencer. You’ve probably heard this word before. To almost everyone, however, the term has a different nuance. What’s an influencer? How do I become one? That’s what we’ll be talking about today.

When you google “influencer,” the definition you find is one that can be attributed to just about everyone. Describing an influencer as “a person or thing that influences another,” I think it’s fair to say that we’re looking for something else. Going down a little bit, you’ll see a different definition:

“a person with the ability to influence potential buyers of a product or service by promoting or recommending the items on social media.”

That’s more like it. What does this mean? More often than not, influencers are some form of a content creator. Whether it be YouTubers, movie stars, TikTok creators, singers, athletes, whatever form they may take, they gain a platform by putting content into the world and building a brand to leverage their audience.

Everyone always asks how they can become an influencer, but the answer is really embedded within the definition. If influencers are people who put content into the world, that’s what you have to do. Many large-scale people support this, most notably Gary Vaynerchuck

Whenever somebody asks Vaynerchuck how to blow up online, he loves to talk about content. From the man himself: “What I’ve done well is documenting my day-to-day. I’ve done such a good job of creating content because when I’m in between meetings and I go to the bathroom; I can go on Twitter. I can reply to a DM. Tonight, when I’m on a flight back to New York, I can go live for seven minutes. I can reply to 84 DMs. I can send three tweets. I am in constant motion.”

Growing a following online isn’t easy, but that’s not the purpose of this article. Before you can hit 10M followers, garner millions of views, and build a fanbase, you must pass the prerequisite of allowing yourself to make content. Without content, you have no influence.

So, to anybody who wants to be the next Charli D’amelio, the easiest way is to…start doing whatever it is you want to do. If you don’t start, you’ll never finish. It’s as easy as that!
